DRIVER CHECKLIST

What to ask before accepting a trucking job

Bring a useful set of questions to your next carrier conversation.

TruckLeadPro editorial • October 20, 2026

The work

Which routes and equipment would I operate? What loading, unloading, customer, or non-driving duties are included? Are lanes dedicated or variable? Who handles dispatch questions outside normal hours?

Time and home life

What does a typical week look like? How far ahead is the schedule known? How are home-time requests handled? What can change the expected return date?

Compensation and costs

How is compensation calculated? Which hours or activities are paid separately? What deductions or out-of-pocket costs apply? Can I review the full structure and benefits in writing?

Support and the next steps

What happens after a breakdown or safety concern? What training is offered? What screening steps remain? Who is the employer named on the offer?

Take time to review the written terms. A good next step is one you understand, not just one that sounds attractive in a short conversation.

This guide offers general decision support. Specific schedules, terms, and eligibility depend on the carrier and applicable requirements.
